- Poverty with relation to education
Holben examines the relationship between poverty and education in his thesis written for his doctoral degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1923. In particular, he looks at how children in poverty-stricken families are effected in their education by being in the social class they are in. This study examines 100 families from Allentown, Pennsylvania who have received charitable aid. The families chosen were listed in the records of the Associated Charities of Allentown, PA. Tables of information are provided which show the make-up of the families interviewed (nationality, occupation, age of parents and children, income, etc.), the educational history of both the parents and the children as well as their attitudes toward school. Holben then offers solutions as to what can be done to address the problematic effect that poverty has on a child's education.
