| Annotation: | This is a transcript of an interview with Mary Schimenek, conducted by Dr. Thomas Dublin on August 6, 1992 for the Lehigh County Historical Society's Oral History Program, Silkworker's Project (#2). In this interview, Schimenek, a former silk mill worker, describes her life in in Austria before emigrating to the United States (Allentown, PA) at the age of 18. She discusses her work history, first as a cigar roller, then as a silk worker at a number of silk factories in the Allentown area. She provides details of the job of a silk weaver and some of the issues that would arise on the job. |
