Nast off for England.
ween Heenan and Sayers, for the Illustra-
ted News. It was kept secret awhile, as a
stroke of policy over F. Leslie. Nast knows the
Berucia Boy from having accompanied Mort.
Thomson to Canada last summer, when the fight
between Heenan and Morrissey came off. Mort
reported it for the Tribune, Nast sketched for
Leslie.
2. Friday. Lovely day. With W. Waud to
Rondel at Pope s studio, where we found him,
his wife (who speaks no English) and children.
Writing. Down-town in the afternoon; return.
Out again at 6, left opera tickets at Edwards
(for Matty) went on to 16th St, with the in-
tention of sending Haney to the house, but as
it subsequently proved he had gone to Bleecker
Street to visit me, supping there. Meanwhile
I supped at Mrs. Potter s, talking with her,
Hayes, Miss Cooper, Mrs. Eldredge and little
Jenny. Mrs. Theodore Griffin is, with her
husband, at Cold Spring, the people at Nia-
gara being uncommonly glad to be rid of her. Return
to Bleecker. Boweryem, Morris and Raw-
son Gill in my room, the latter got to talk-
ing Spanish at a great rate to Ledger. In
the latters room afterwards. Abed about 1 1/2, as
usual of late.

| Note: | Thomas Butler Gunn was born February 15, 1826, in Banbury, England, and came to New York in 1849. During the Civil War he worked as a correspondent for the New York Tribune and the New York Evening Post. He returned to England in 1863, and died in Birmingham in April 1903. The collection includes twenty-one volumes of his diaries, including newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, sketches, and various other items inserted by Gunn. Diary entries date from July 7, 1849, to April 7, 1863, and include his experiences with the New York publishing and literary world, his descriptions of boarding houses, his travels throughout the United States, and his experiences traveling with the Federal army as a Civil War correspondent. |
