7. Saturday. Down town most part of the day. Seeing about
Reveille cuts &c. To the Lantern Office afternoon. Great
crowd there. Engravers, scribblers & artists. That indefatigable
shifty man Powell in the corner doing his best by word of mouth
to pacify them. Post Office &c. Writing, (I think) in the
evening.
8. Sunday. Crossed to Governor s Island by 12. Dined
with Barth, then together back, and to New York. Took the Staten
Island boat and to the Clifton Park and Pagoda. Out among
the trees, lying under the shade of melancholy boughs, talking
healthfully, or reading a letter I had gotten from Boutcher, dated
Rome, and descriptive of his travel over the Alps. Return to
New York by 6, supped nigh the Battery, then to Brooklyn
and called on the Normans. A room full of people. Piano
forte playing and songs. Left about 11, saw Barth to a
boatmans & to New York and bed.
9. Monday. Drawing divers initials for the Lantern, during
the morning, & a subject for Lockington. Afternoon down town calling
at Roberts, he accompanying me. To Lantern & Reveille
Offices; joined Roberts again and with him to Brooklyn and Grays
Bath. Half an hours swimming & splashing, then to Roberts
house. Supped there; in a parlor with a lot of girls afterwards
To my room about 11, or later.

| Note: | Thomas Butler Gunn was born February 15, 1826, in Banbury, England, and came to New York in 1849. During the Civil War he worked as a correspondent for the New York Tribune and the New York Evening Post. He returned to England in 1863, and died in Birmingham in April 1903. The collection includes twenty-one volumes of his diaries, including newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, sketches, and various other items inserted by Gunn. Diary entries date from July 7, 1849, to April 7, 1863, and include his experiences with the New York publishing and literary world, his descriptions of boarding houses, his travels throughout the United States, and his experiences traveling with the Federal army as a Civil War correspondent. |
