peckers, then Lantern and Reveille Offices. Dined at Goslings.
About Nassau Street till 2 1/2, then to the East River to
see Joe s ship, the Ocean Eagle, in which he goes to Australia,
on Monday starting. A fine vessel, tall raking masts and
plenty of space tween decks. Back to office &c.
12. Sunday. Joe called again. and off. Dressed and
to the vessel. Returned and dined at 1 at Shades, with
Waud & Swinton. A chill, dull, day threatening rain, but
clearing up as day drew on. To Mr Greatbatchs, there sup-
ping and staying till 7, then Joe out with me. Called on
Royals to bid him good-bye. At Laurie s. Parted with
Joe at Chapin s, and heard half the sermon, being joined by
Waud at the conclusion. Walked with him to Fulton Ferry,
returned to room and bed.
13. Monday. Drawing. Reveille work. Down town, dined &
to the Lantern Office. Then to the East River & Ocean Eagle.
A lovely, sunny though breezy day, the little red flags on the
top of the tall masts fluttering out in the direction of the Narrows.
All astir on board, it being clearly evident that another hour
would see the good ship on her way to the Antipodes. Great
throngs aboard, men everywhere, sailors astir and howling, the
emigrants mounted on every elevation taking a farewell glance

| Note: | Thomas Butler Gunn was born February 15, 1826, in Banbury, England, and came to New York in 1849. During the Civil War he worked as a correspondent for the New York Tribune and the New York Evening Post. He returned to England in 1863, and died in Birmingham in April 1903. The collection includes twenty-one volumes of his diaries, including newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, sketches, and various other items inserted by Gunn. Diary entries date from July 7, 1849, to April 7, 1863, and include his experiences with the New York publishing and literary world, his descriptions of boarding houses, his travels throughout the United States, and his experiences traveling with the Federal army as a Civil War correspondent. |
