4. Thursday. Drawing. Britt the Engraver called,
& Copcutt, both desirous of seeing Leslie (alias Carter).
Lockington called twice, second time at 1 1/2. Out with
him, dining together at Sweeny s, then down town, called
at Lantern Office, Powell, Watson &c. Bunnell &
Price s, then to Weed with big Picayune drawings. Return
& drawing on wood, finished drawing No 2 to-day.
Copcutt called again. Waud came, supped with him,
boot buying, both to my room & drawing on wood.
Frank Royal & a boy-friend of his came, to look
over my port-folio s. Drawing on till 11, things
for Lockington, Waud off at 9 1/2.
These be different times from King s Road evenings,
& loving trysts about Grays Inn. Heigho?
5. Friday. Leslie called. Talk of a certain new
Illustrated paper, projected by the great Barnum, calcu-
lated I hope to lick the wretched Fleece em s into immortal
smash. Lockington s boy called, Davis called & Mac
Namara, who told of divers knoweries of Anderson &

| Note: | Thomas Butler Gunn was born February 15, 1826, in Banbury, England, and came to New York in 1849. During the Civil War he worked as a correspondent for the New York Tribune and the New York Evening Post. He returned to England in 1863, and died in Birmingham in April 1903. The collection includes twenty-one volumes of his diaries, including newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, sketches, and various other items inserted by Gunn. Diary entries date from July 7, 1849, to April 7, 1863, and include his experiences with the New York publishing and literary world, his descriptions of boarding houses, his travels throughout the United States, and his experiences traveling with the Federal army as a Civil War correspondent. |
