North River, and the Ocean Steamships. Sate talking on
many things till 7, when we went off to Florence s in
Broadway to sup, I & Charley. Talk of the Brown
Family at length. Of the New Orlean s brother Henry. How
by a masterly legal swindle in bankruptcy he had acquired
some $20,000 or so, two years back. How George, and
his precious wife with her dowry of children came down at his
invitation. Did nothing, spent money. Wife who in her
pomes was always Dear-Fredding him, and talking how
she only wanted a sackcloth frock, bare cottage and love,
did in sober prose squander, and idle, and be-drabble herself;
how he George, hadn t any shirts , how indolence and dissi-
pation, folly and selfishness played the devil with the lot.
Harry seems to be the fast man. Gambles away his ill
gotten thousands, drinks and the rest of it. Albert inane,
idle and nothing. George sick, spitting blod, expecting
death at Pine Woods wife with him, amusing herself as
wont, scandal busy about her. Fitting sister for Mrs
Kidder! / Back to Collin s Hotel for Charley s good
sister, and walked about Saint John s Park till 10
or later.

| Note: | Thomas Butler Gunn was born February 15, 1826, in Banbury, England, and came to New York in 1849. During the Civil War he worked as a correspondent for the New York Tribune and the New York Evening Post. He returned to England in 1863, and died in Birmingham in April 1903. The collection includes twenty-one volumes of his diaries, including newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, sketches, and various other items inserted by Gunn. Diary entries date from July 7, 1849, to April 7, 1863, and include his experiences with the New York publishing and literary world, his descriptions of boarding houses, his travels throughout the United States, and his experiences traveling with the Federal army as a Civil War correspondent. |
