worlds, of the Moon; of the ante-inhabited world; of monstrous ferns, of zoo-
phytes, of Pre-adamite reptiles, of that geological-[unclear word]-book The Vestiges of
Creation:
of German Hartz-mountain legends: of Schillers Diver; of Death; of Time
and space: of Yucatan and forest hidden cities: of extinct civilisation, of Co-
lumbus, of Cortes and merciless Pizarro: of the California discovery and its future
effect, of the wondrous age we live in and how it will be spoken of when a thousand
years have rolled by; of what we have seen and may yet live to see. And of

  16. Wednesday. Early down town to the sons of Beach thinking of inserting two lines
requesting the Monday visitor to call again, but the price asked was over much. To
Beekman Street, and off with Waud for a days Hobokenizing. A glorious summers
day pleasantly spent. Trees all in the glorious dyes of autumn leaves thick strewn
neath our feet as we ramble through brake, bramble, and coppice, and over the rocks
and upon them. Dined al fresco on the rocks summit, a desert of butter nuts, an
hours halt, then onwards. Tree branches burning, talk of painters and sing-
ing of songs. Got to little Wee-hawken villages at 5, and after a moderate im-
bibation of ale set off back. Return along the river side, tide in, skeletons of
horses lying mid the stones, thick mist rising over the marshes; cold clear moon
above us. Got back to York about 7. Writing the rest of the evening.
  17. Thursday. Writing all the day. Rain dreary and intermittent out of doors.
Waud called in the morning; and again in the evening, staying till 11. Combination
projects.
  18. Friday. Writing. Waud present morning, afternoon and evening. Commenced
a picture of the Bhoys running wid der Machine on canvas, I to make the design,
and do
the drawing, he the painting. Letters arrived in the afternoon, one from M, and a
few lines in the other from my mother. Matagrabolized and pecuniarily anxious in mind,
intermittent rain out of doors.
