told Thomson.   Mort, by the way, got Beckett Bellew
his berth of overlooker at the Central Park.  Talk of
that doggy individual.   How he insulted Aaron Jones
the pugilist, down at Crook and Duff�s, being, as usual, 
drunk and the pugilist refusing to drink with him. How
he fought with, licked and then drank beer with a
long shoreman, in one of the river-side streets.   With
more.           Fanny retired early, Jim followed by 10 1/2,
we sat up half an hour later.        They have cut Ulric,
passing him without recognition in the street.    The little
ass�s behaviour had become intolerable to Grace.   He
made love to her, was full of absurd asperities, jealous-
ies (!) and the like.  He would be perpetually inquiring
whether his nose was red, it having a tendency to that
way, when according to the reply he�d rush to the
�refrigerator� as he called the regulator, to modify or increase the
temperature of the room!    The man was amusing, but
like most fools a tremendous bore.     The tortures his
vanity will put him to, now he�s bowed out, will be
awful.     He wears excruciatingly tight boots, being
absurdly vain of his feet.   Fanny, noticing this, once
trotted him off for a walk with her and almost lamed 
him.  He had to �acknowledge his corns� and plead to
be let off!!
  20.  Sunday.  Back to New York, through the
mist and drizzle.  Fog very heavy on the river.  Dropped
in at Chapin�s, paid up for seat till May.  Looked in
