12. Friday. Drawing. Down town after
dinner to Century and Pic Offices, returning Bowery
way. Cahill in Gun�s room at night. He is
filling Haney�s place on the Courier during the former�s
absence and don�t seem to love a hard days work.
Wrote letter to Hannah.
13. Saturday. Drawing and writing: out to
Spring St Post Office. To Century Office after
dinner, to P.O. returned per omnibus. To draw-
ing again till 8. Shepherd up in Gun�s room.
14. Sunday. Drawing, reading &c; Cahill up,
principally in Gun�s room. Out with him after din-
ner, with intent to go to the Central Park but the
cars looked so crowded that we abandoned the idea
for a loafing along the riverside wharfs, where we
saw policemen taking away the clothes of boys who were
bathing. Return. With Morris to Palace Garden
in the evening, met Perkins, a nephew of Everett�s, and
another. Gun and Cahill drinking in the former�s
room, which they kept up till 4 A. M. I leaving
them at midnight, � considerably drunk then. There�s
no hope whatever of reforming Cahill, relieved from
temporary necessity he is as rudderless as ever.
