noon. Did not go out any more this day. Homer Hall, Cross and Alf
as company. Reading Ten Thousand &c. Barth called on the morning
of yesterday, also I had a letter from home. From my Mother and from Naomi.
  3. Monday. Intending a days hard work, but the day so sunny, the sky
so fresh and Alf Waud so inclined for a days vagabondize that off we start,
committing ourselves to ferry boat for Hoboken. Haydon Hall aboard, converse with
him of Mammoth Cave and Panoramas generally, a breezy day outside,
and the waves calling. A brisk riverside tramp of three miles, then ascend
the rocks, and commence sketching, the familiar part, the wild position into
which the stones have fallen conveying the idea of a Druidical Cromlech. This,
with the tall rocks sheltering us from above, the warm sun on our backs, and
a calm, glad silence around passed the happy morning. Alf sketching on
canvas, in al, I with paper and pencil. Drawing done, firing the
dried leaves &c. And at about 2, he hiding his sketch in the fissure
of a huge rock, we descend and back to Canal. Dine in kitchen and
then ascent. Mrs Dob inducts a strange man into my room intimating hes
to abide there. Wont have it, so Alf comes in, and relinquishes his to
the stranger, an employee of Mr Hall. Evening Cross comes home bruised
horse having smashed the buggy to smithereens, spilt him on a load of iron-
ware and then stood still. Homer Hall and Atchien in company with
us. The latter teaching us how to do our Autographs in Chinese. Heard
to day that Alfred Brown of Albany, Charleys elder brother, and the
main stay and hope of em had become bankrupt.
{4. Tuesday. In doors, drawing. Pictons portrait &c. Cross,
  5. Wednesday.} Wand, and Homer Hall generally present during
the evenings. Atchein much in our room, laughing, howling &
cutting capers.
  6. Thursday. Drawing, Genins caps. Waud over at Brooklyn
