              October.
  1. Monday.  Rain all day; at work for Sartain�s Mag. Wing
Ben; Brinsley and all the fellow denizens here blue-devilled and
do nothing but smoke and read. Joe deferred migration till next 
morn.   At night a farewell whist-game, brandy punch and
vocalizing and smoke.   Gave Joe an extempore parody on �Jeannette
and Jeannot� en farewell.
  2. Tuesday. Joe gone. (Now is he off the scene. Faith this
same diarizing reads strangely dramatic. Some intimate, some
acquaintance, freind comes in, plays a brief part, then off into
Cimmerian non-existance � at least to me.  How they come and
go? � Barth, Bill Bilton, the office fellows, George � some names
never more shall I jot down again, others after a pause more or less 
enter again.   Here am I, of all late kin to me, alone in this little
treey dull Jersey, � Greatbatch, George, Joe � all off the stage.
Never talk of changes of half a century � half ten years shew
Spensers �Mutability� in all her power.

  {3. Wednesday.   Did not stir out of doors during all this time
  4. Thursday.   save a few minutes walk to the Schnieders.
  5. Friday.   Drawing on wood for Sartain. Mostly rainy.
  6. Saturday.}   suicidal weather out o�doors. Wing nothing to 
do, Ben ditto, both of �em at dominoes all the live long day. Brins-
