  Philip Ripley was born in Winchester, N. H., in
1828, was graduated at Union College in 1848, was
city editor of the Evening Post in 1860-�61, was cor-
respondent of the World in New Orleans in 1862-
�64, and at the same time, was connected with the
New Orleans Picayune, returned to New York and
was an editorial writer on the World till 1875, when
he joined the revising staff of the �American
Cyclop�dia.�  In 1884 he resumed his connection
with the World editorial staff.
