                        In New Orleans.
at the foot of the table near Knapp.    Returned,
in carriages to New Orleans.   Strother with
us.    Howell conversing with the driver learnt
a good deal of Walker, among other things the
story of a negro of his who had been previously
pointed out to us.     It is told on page 127.
  29.  Monday.   A dull, clammy overcast
day.  Hayes sick.  Writing to the Tribune.  Down
to the levee in the hope to get the letter off by the
Arago, but she had started.     Met the pilot of
the North Star.    Back, rather out of sorts,
through the mercantile part of the city, which
looked depressing enough.    Had a meal of
oysters and returned to the hotel.     In room
with Schell, alternately with that occupied by
Hayes and Howell.
  30.  Tuesday.   A. C. Hills back from Ba-
ton Rouge, with news of the burning of the
state-house.     With Howell to the Matanzas
steamer; writing in cabin.      Back just as Ha-
milton arrived      Alone to Gen. Hamilton�s;
saw him and Herbert.       Talk with the latter
about Gen�s. Banks and Hamilton.     Return
to the St Charles.        Met Howell again and
Dr Knapp.       To room, scribbling.  A. G.
Hills in.     Writing to the Tribune and to Bow-
eryem at night.
  31.  Wednesday.   With A. G. Hills to carry
