  The St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans.

  1.  Thursday.   Early uprising and limited ab-
lutions; three persons to one basin, and half a gal-
lon of water.    Hills off to gun-boat, Breed and
I down-stairs, partaking of a sorry breakfast,
consisting mainly of grease and extract of beans,
served by a slovenly negro.     That hastily dis-
posed of we entered the train � which had wait-
ed for us and which gave time to the returning
A. G. to fetch his carpet bag.   Off.   A sunny,
clear day.     Felt out of sorts, tied and torment-
ed with ear pain.    Got to Algiers by 3.  Tramp-
ed to ferry and through New Orleans to the
welcome St. Charles.    Schell and others in the
Rotunda.      With him and A. G. Hills to the South-
ern Restaurant, then back to the hotel, when
I incontinently went to bed, feeling tired and
sick all over.
