              zel.   Off.  Down the river.  Reading  
Roderick Random.  Supper.  H. Hills &
Howell disappear afterwards (being drink-
ing in the Steward�s room)  I sit reading
till 11, by which time the New Bruns-
wick reaches New Orleans.   General 
turning out of berths and cabins and
going ashore.     H. Hills and Howell 
do so.   I turn into berth above B.
Hills and sleep till morning.
  23.  Friday.   Got breakfast 
aboard � then ashore with baggage 
and B. Hills.   To Gen. Banks head-
quarters, in search of expected mails.  
Then down St Charles St. to Lafayette 
Square, where Hills paid a visit to 
Mc Clure at the quartermaster�s office, 
and I mounted guard over the baggage.   
Ripley came by.   To hotel.    Got 
separate rooms.   Waked up Hayes
who was abed.      Saw all the other 
fellows, except Hamilton, who had 
gone down to forts below the city.
