                       St. Augustine.
back to dinner.  Reading a History of the
place afterwards.  Out in company with
a lieutenant Kendall (who was going to be
tried by Court Martial for getting drunk
and calling a brother officer a s�_n of a b___h)
to the old city gate, at evening, looking at
the prospect, the ruined wall, the fort with
the stars and stripes flying, the woods and
luxuriated vegetation, the white tents and
blue sky.  Enjoying the sea-breeze.  Re-
turning witnessed a row, a number of sailors
breaking into a house occupied by some negro
women, who shouted for the patrol.  A piazza
evening.  Much talk in Kendall�s room
about his court martial.
   30.  Wednesday.  Seeing guard mount
the Plaza, and listening to the band,
pretty scene.  A bottle of champagne at
a sutlers.  To a stylish house alluded
to in letter on page 99, from the summit
of which I had a fine view of the city.  In
front of this house was a garden with limes
and lemons growing in it and a cocoa-
nut palm.  Returning to the hotel, loaf-
ing and scribbling.  A talk with Pesetti
the mayor and Buffington.  In the eve-
ning a stroll with Jarvis, a storekeeper
