              Took a refreshing cobbler luxuriously, under
the trees, and looking on the holiday-making
hundreds all about.  Swinton�s brother and part-
ner doing a roaring trade.    Rambled off
amid the trees &c for an hour or more,
but few about, as the overclouded sky, and
stilled wind began to forbade rain, � which
however did not come, save a few drops on
the surface of the little ponds.       A chat with
Swintons father & a glass, Swinton himself joined
us once.       Return to New York by the 
last (7 o�clock) boat, took a meal at Gos-
lings and to my room.   Very well content
to have been alone the day.
  21.  Monday.  Up early, down town, breakfasted
at the �Excelsior�, (meeting Waud there).   To Wells
and Webbs, expending $ 1.50 for blocks, to the
Post Office, then returned.   Drawing sketch for
