17. Friday. Down town to Sachem Office. Two hours or
so there, Picton, Mount, Wren & the usual crowd about, pun-
ning, joking & revilement, as usual ending in triple imbibition.
Nagle met us, & assisted at the oblation. Got daguerrotypes of
Wren & Picton for transferment to wood. Dined; to Post Office
& woodpeckers. To Lantern Office. Swinton there. Row
with Powell. Brougham present. Ignored Powell�s existence
& talked to Brougham. To Neagle & other calls. Return
ned to room at about 5. Waud & Davis came. Supped
at Van Name & Bush�s with them. Returned & to bed.
Dismal night, excessive diarrhea.
18. Saturday. Sachem Office once, twice and thrice,
with intermediate visits to Randall, the Lantern & Reveille
Offices. Finally found Picton � rather owlishly drunken, �
two or three others & a young woman who called him �Tho-
mas.� Got Reveille money. Previously had delivered to
