Talk with Brougham, Watson &c, former left. Another row
with Powell. No money. Calling in at the Daily Times
Office I met Weldon, and to my great pleasure found him to
be the Author of certain letters published in the paper under
the nomm de plume of the �City Hall Bellringer�, �
clever things they are too. Drank with him. To
Halleck Building. In at Swinton & Fay�s. Roberts
there. Evening, in my room some time, then out to
sup at the Shades. Turning out at 9 o�clock stood
on the Broadway sidewalk a good half hour, looking on the
passers by. A thoughtful, exer-
cise this.
19. Sunday. Doing chores &cs till Waud came, with word
that he & Fay were off for a sketching excursion. Out with
them, leaving them & returning to breakfast, they off for
Hoboken. Followed, with Mathews �Moneypenny� & pipe. Found
them by the Pavilion, Elysian Fields tavern, both standing
sketching a certain sleeping toper, who lay under an old
boat, amid the trees. Rambled on with them & thus
