              called.   /     Down town, saw Bunnell; to Post Office, to the
Wood-peckers, to the �Lantern� Office.  Brougham & Powell
there & �Allie Vernon�.     To Lockington�s.      Return, dined
at the Shades, to room, reading &c          Writing words for to-
morrows cuts.  Mr Greatbatch came, with letters from home. From
my mother, sisters & Samuel.     /            Swinton came up & left.
Waud came.      Out with him at 7 1/2, long walk up Broadway
Canal St & St Johns� Park.              I called at Beach Street,
but hearing from boy Will that his mother & Lotty were out,
left,  supped at Shellys & to room again (parting with Waud.
  23.  Saturday.  Down town by 10, to the Engravers.
Thence to Bunnell & Price�s, Picayune & Lantern Offices.
Mathews & Reveille Offices.   Mr Charles about again.     To
the �Sachem� Office, where I found Picton muffled up in his
�Garde National�  Algerine-looking, branded capote, he being
sick & suffering under divers combined inflictions of piles, bronchitis
&c.  Brice, Purdy  &c              Dined at the �Shades�.   Return
to room &c, down town again, to Post Office, Bunnell &
Prices, getting paid $24; ($11 from Reveille.)       To Chapin�s
rooms.   Waud there, supped with him at Sweeneys, then to 
room awhile.   He off to Castle Garden fair.       I called
at Royals, had a smoke with him, returned to room &
bed about 11.
