24. Sundays. Waud came. Breakfasted with him at
�Clem�s�, then a long walk up Broadway, with intent to
visit the site & commencement of the Crystal Palace there-
to be erected. A summer�s day out of place, and very pleasant
did the aristocratic uptown streets look in the peaceful
Sabbath morning. Quitted Waud at Union Square, (having
sprained my knee overnight,) & returned. Dined at Mr
Greatbatch�s, & there stayed till 3; out with him to
Swinton�s room, where Waud was engaged on my portrait,
in company with Swinton. Returned to Mulberry Street,
supped, stayed awhile, and at 8 or so called at Mrs Kidders.
Talk with her, Morse and others, there till 10.
25. Monday. Randall came. &c Drawing till 2,
dined at Shades, then down town, to Post Office & Engravers,
Bunnell &c Reveille & Lantern Offices. Called at Chapins
Office for Waud, Swinton called also. Supped at Sweeny�s
with Waud. To room afterwards, writing, reading &c
26. Tuesday. Work till 2, Randall called & had
two drawings. Dined, down town, wintry cold day. At
Bunnells, saw Brougham & Powell there; saw Purdy,
told me Picton was sick, seriously; � return to room &
work, finished second Picayune big cut; out to supper
by 7. Returning, attracted by the blaze of Tammany
