              some 7 to send to Strong by the beginning of the next
month.    Reading some spare scraps of time,  Poe.   Weldon
called once or twice, as did others.        A letter from
George Bolton.     Altogether a hurried, unwholesome,
hot, weary time, with busy days & restless nights, disturb-
ed by fragmentary dreams of home, England, & what not.
  I
		             December.
  1. Wednesday.    Down town by noon with heap of blocks
first to Wells & Webbs, then Strongs; thence to Lantern
Office  & Bunnell & Price�s.   Thence to the Engravers
and met first Mr Greatbatch, then Hammett.   Dined,
returned to room.   Waud came up, sat an hour or two,
then out with him to Canal Street, where we had a
warm bath each.
  2. Thursday.  Down town, to Moor Street.  Met Mr Hawes
& wife as appointed, about little girls portrait.   Return, called
at Lantern Office, met Howard there, an artist.  With him
to my room.   Field called, & (Howard having left)   told
me of his approaching departure for Australia.  /  Down
town, after dining,   bought $4 hat at Genins, and neckerchief
shawl.   To Wells & Webb. Met Levy there.     Return
to room.      Called on Royal at Evening.       A letter from
