              the river was swollen, and came down roaring and tumbling
into the 80 feet chasm with very picturesque fury.    Down below,
whither we clambered, was a perfect forest and thicket of ice-
covered trees, a frozen wood, each branch and twig encased
and imprisoned, huge boughs bound down to the ice-hid rocks on
which they grew.       I never saw or imagined aught so beautiful
in the wintry way.      The stream all brawling and chafing
with rocks flowed between these  minor Arctic forests.
Made a sketch of it.       Afterwards in the ruined houses adja-
cent.      Back, drying, feeding, eating, drinking, cardplaying
fumigating  &c.    Bed about 11.
