the starch out of him. )          Godfroy is on board, with divers
whisky bottles and other baggage, and five or six Indians all round
him, one young squaw rather good-looking, respecting whom he re-
peated his former Homeric offer to me.        There was any amount of 
uproar, chaffering and laughing going on, lots of the red vagabonds
both ashore and in the canoes were drunk as may be.      The
crowd on the shore and about was picturesque as ever.    Gettings off
again, aboard again, canoes every where, a lovely summers evening,
the water with scarce a ripple.       Up above looking on; � then sup-
per.   After, tossing apples, biscuits, bright new cent pieces among the
crowd to scramble for, on which boys, girls, men and women would
run, stumble and roll over in the endeavour to clutch them from
the long grass.        The mirth and fun increased, fellows got on
shore again; Montgomery rushing about with a stick and the boys run-
ning away from it and him.      Close by, nigh a little pond com-
mingling with the river, two squaws were at work building a hut,
which they both commenced and completed while we were there.  Specu-
lations are put forth as to whether the Sam Ward will put forth
that night, for wer�e fast aground.  Had we stayed there�d
have been much fun and more immorality. Chiefs farewell speech.  In an adjoining
wigwam, noise of barberous tambour playing is heard, which sets
us inquiring for a dance.     And after some delay eight men ap-
pear from huts, motley attired and paint-besmeared.   One had
soldiers old red coat, with brass about the shoulders, and
Indian fixings for the other parts of his anatomy.  Another was bare
to the middle, had great pads of grass engirdling him and hideously painted.  All had 
chaplets of painted
