Lauren Coats is Assistant Professor of English at Louisiana State University. She is a scholar of early American literature with a special focus on geography, travel, and exploration in American literature and culture. Coats worked in Lehigh University Library's Special Collections as a Council of Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Postdoctoral Fellow, which is where she first came across the Ameri[c]an Atlas.

Joel Kovarsky (MD, MS) is an antiquarian map dealer and independent scholar. He taught a periodic course ("The Roles of Old Maps: History, Art, Cartography and the Building of Nations") for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia, and taught segments of a course on the "Introduction to Printed Maps" for the Rare Book School of the University of Virginia. He is responsible for the "Recent Publications" column in The Portolan, the journal of the Washington Map Society. He holds a Master of Science from the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville).
