Biography/History

William Strohmeier was born to Friedrich Wilhelm and Caroline Fredericke (Garbelman) Strohmeier on March 18, 1858 in Spragueville, Monroe County, Pa. William became a student at Moravian Theological Seminary in 1875 and upon graduation in 1882 received an appointment as pastor at Canaan, North Dakota. Prior to departure for North Dakota, William was ordained as a deacon in Gnadenhuetten, Ohio, on August 6, 1882 by Bishop H.J. Van Vleck. While in Canaan William married Elizabeth Hoyler, the daughter of Jacob and Emily (Ruprecht) Hoyler, on October 28, 1884. That same year William was consecrated as a presbyter on May 25, 1884, in Lititz, Pa. by Bishop A.A. Reinke. They had their first child, Elsie Johanna, born on August 6, 1888. The family left North Dakota for Lake Mills, Wisconsin, where he served from September 1889-1900. During that time the couple had four more children: Emile Carolina, January 11, 1891, Dorothy Clara, July 24, 1895, Rowland William, April 29, 1897, and Adella Elizabeth, June 13, 1898. In 1900 William was called to Unionville, Michigan, where William served for five years. Their last child, Clara Alice, was born on May 29, 1902 in Unionville. The family was then moved to South Bethlehem, Pa. for four years, after which he served in Gnadenhuetten from 1909-1913. In 1913 William took a temporary retirement for a year as a result of a nervous breakdown. He then served as a pastor in Schoeneck, Pa. (1914-1818), Graceham, Maryland (1918-1919), Lebanon, Pa. (1919-1920), and Coopersburg, Pa. (1920-1922). Strohmeier retired in Coopersburg, Pa. but after a year he accepted the position of Pastor in Charge in Bethlehem, Pa. (1923-1927). He served as the assistant librarian at Moravian College and Theological Seminary until his death on Monday, March 7, 1932. He was survived by his wife, who lived until September 8, 1961.
