Scope/Contents

This collection includes various items belonging to Otto Christoph Krogstrup, a Moravian Minister. It includes letters written to Krogstrup, hymn books, prayer books, numerous volumes of Biblical commentary, manuscript dictionaries and grammar books.

Biography/History

Otto Christoph Krogstrup was born on August 18, 1714 in Funen, Denmark. He received his religious education in Copenhagen, under the auspices of Pietistic Lutherans. While living in Denmark, he served as a minister for several congregations before becoming acquainted with the Moravians. In 1748, he travelled to Herrnhut to join the Moravian Church. Soon after, he began to work as a Moravian Minister in Marienborn and Herrnhaag. In 1749, he travelled to England with several other members of the Church to study in Barby, Northamptonshire. After completing his studies, Krogstrup moved to the United States in 1753. He married Anna Burnet on April 20, 1757. In the United States, he began a long and distinguished career as a minister in the Church's Northern Province. He headed Moravian congregations in Philadelphia, PA, Lititz, PA, Graceham, MD, York, PA and Lancaster, PA. During this time, he penned many treatises on the Bible and other religious topics. He also wrote numerous reference materials. In 1784, he briefly retired to Bethlehem, PA due to health problems. After recovering, he headed the congregation at Gnadenthal, PA for a short time. He then returned to Bethlehem, where he died on October 10, 1785. He was 71 years old.

Restrictions

unrestricted, some items very fragile.

Custodial History

The Moravian Archives received the Otto Christoph Krogstrup Papers at different times. Though the donators are unverified, a significant portion of the collection consists of manuscript books written by Krogstrup; they were original part of the Congregational Library. Other materials in Krogstrup's posession were united with these books by Lothar Madeheim in 1967. In the summer of 2011, the collection was reorganized by Erin Thorn, a Lehigh University student working on the CLIR grant.
