Abstract
The narrator, Rufus Storke, begins by telling of an invitation to a charity ball which he reluctantly attends. There he flirts, dances, and escorts home a beautiful woman named Hannah, finding out later that she is the governess of a wealthy home-owner. Shocked and embarressed, Storke immediately moves to a home away from this neighborhood.
