Homosexuals have been fighting to gain an identity. Although many would say that the gay community already has an identity, the fact remains that their identity is based on sexual preference, which makes it difficult to differentiate between one gay man and another; and being an individual can be complicated. In 1978, in response to an activist need for a gay community symbol, Gilbert Baker of San Francisco came up with the design of the Rainbow Flag. The multi-colored theme represents the multi-faceted gay community, with its diverse population and open-minded approach towards society and life in general. The Rainbow Flag continues to remind the public that regardless of sexual orientation, we all belong to one world wide community which is celebrates diversity yet offers a safety zone, the common ground of humanity.
